With the encouragement from the Ministry of Culture, CCPIT, Gansu provincial Committee of CPC, Gansu Provincial Government and APCEO, the 1st International Culture Industry Summit was held in the intersection point of the Silk Road culture and the Great Wall culture of China--Jiayunguan City of Gansu Province, which is also the holy land of Chinese ancient civilization, and important guests from 30 countries and regions around the world participated in the summit. The theme of the summit is “Chinese civilization and the development of global cultural industries”.

It is a great pleasure for me to attend the Opening Ceremony of the First International Culture Industry Conference and the Fifth Gansu Culture Industry Fair. On behalf of the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China, I would like to extend warm welcome and heartfelt thanks to distinguished guests and journalists from home and abroad for attending this conference! I also wish to offer my warmest congratulations on the opening of the conference!
Developing the cultural industry is an important task for the prosperity and development of socialist culture in the market economy. The CPC Central Committee and the State Council attach great importance to and vigorously promote the rapid development of China's cultural industries, as a result cultural industries have increasingly shown vitality and great potential. The Sixth Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee made overall arrangements for the work to deepen reform of the cultural system and to promote the great development and prosperity of socialist culture. It requires us to promote leapfrog development of the cultural industry, make it a new economic growth point, a pivot for the strategic restructuring of the economy, an important focal point for changing the pattern of economic development and a pillar of the national economy. This also marks that the development of China's cultural industry has entered a new stage of achieving breakthroughs. To thoroughly implement the spirit of the Sixth Plenary Session and promote the sustained and healthy development of the cultural industry, the Ministry of Culture has specially developed the Multiplication Plan for the Cultural Industry during the Twelfth Five-Year Plan Period which put forward the objective of doubling the added value of cultural industries under the jurisdiction of cultural administrative departments during the “12th Five Year Plan” period and deployed specific tasks and defined key areas of development.
Gansu Province is endowed with abundant cultural resources and cultural heritage, here you can find many cultural and art treasures, such as Mogao Grottoes with the largest-scale and richest Buddhist art in the world, as well as the world famous ancient Silk Road. Gansu Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government have always taken the great prosperity and development of culture as an important aspect of economic and social development, and have put forward many new ideas and requirements such as developing Gansu into a strong province of culture and theatre, as a result gratifying achievements have been made in cultural development and cultural industries are growing vigorously. Especially at the end of last year, the provincial government brought forward the strategy of establishing the demonstration area for protecting and carrying on the Chinese civilization and promoting its development creatively which takes cultural development as an important breakthrough point and impetus of building a happy and beautiful new Gansu and becoming a well-off society together with the whole country. This strategy is of great significance for
Gansu to further promote cultural industries to give impetus to the development of tourism, service sector and the economic and social development as a whole.
The International Culture Industry Conference will play a positive role in promoting global exchange of information and technologies of cultural industries, enhancing international cooperation in cultural sectors and increasing international presence of Chinese culture, it can also contribute to exchange of experiences among participating parties, understanding and grasping the new development trends of cultural industries, and exploring new measures of promoting the development of cultural sector. I believe people from all walks of life in Gansu will make the most of this summit to learn advanced experiences, bring into play their own advantages, build consensus and make greater progress to turn their strategy of building a demonstration area for protecting and carrying on Chinese civilization and promoting its development creatively into a beautiful reality so as to greet the opening of the 18th National Party Congress with outstanding accomplishments.
